BALTIMORE — Edwin Gaynor wanted to be truthful in his Baltimore police Department application, so when the form asked if he'd ever committed a crime, he checked "yes."
When the startled application reviewers saw the questionnaire and asked him what he'd done, police say Gaynor told them he'd robbed five people in Texas and also carjacked a woman.
Officers arrested him shortly afterward.
"Believe it or not, it's as simple as that," said Kevin Enright, a spokesman for the Baltimore Police Department.
"They asked a few routine questions to see if he was joking," Enright said. When they determined Gaynor was serious, they called the warrant apprehension task force, and searched their databases to see if his story matched any outstanding crimes.
After completing the application last Thursday morning, the 21-year-old wanna-be officer even mentioned to the Baltimore officers he'd used a green-and-white bandana in the crimes and a chrome handgun, police said.
Authorities in Killeen, Texas, told them the details matched their records perfectly, and a search of Gaynor's home and his mother's house turned up the bandana and gun, as well as rifles and other weapons.
Gaynor has been charged with carjacking, but police in Texas are still investigating a possible connection to the robberies.
"This is the first time this has happened as far as anyone can remember," Enright added.
The suspect's mother, Alice Gaynor, told the Baltimore Sun she though police must be mistaken.
"He has never been violent," she said.
Her son was unemployed and very interested in joining the police, she said.
"He always wanted to be one."
