<<Also, they have found what they call "elevated" levels of both asbestos & dioxin in the soot of the World Trade Center. I was told long ago, by a coroner no less, that all it takes is 1 asbestos fiber lodged in the lining of the lung to induce lung cancer.

Having worked in the environmental consulting field I know a little about this.

Asbestosis is the term used for the lodging of fibers in the lungs. The body is unable to break the fiber down so in defense it creates scar tissue around the fibers. This is a progressive disease that takes many years to show up (10-30years). This scarring prevents oxygen from passing into the blood. A smoker has a much, much more higher chance of getting Asbestosis.

Mesothelioma is much more serious (and much less common). It is a cancer. Again it can take up to 30 or 40 years to show up. I believe there still isn't much in the way of treatments besides tradional cancer treatments (chemo, radiation, etc) and is often fatal.

There is much debate on how "toxic" asbestos really is. There are two types of asbestos fibers (I would need to look up the names). The one that is considered "benign" is the common fibre that was used in most industrial applications. I worked with some within the industry that basically claimed the lawsuits were as trumped up as the silicone breast implant lawsuits (which were a real joke).

I am no expert so I have no way to prove/disprove any of the lawsuits.. But I do know how the lawyer mentality works....

btw, the list of materials using asbestos prior to the mid-70's is almost endless.
