Needless to say, that was not the way I worked it out. My reasoning, such as it was: JJJ had to be either 333, 666, or 999. Since JJJ had also to be the sum of three three-digit figures, none of which had a leading zero, it was most likely 999. Therefore one simply had to set up three columns of three-digit figures comprised of 1-8 and zero, which, added up, would come to 999. It's immediately obvious that there are too many high numbers to work out a scheme in which all three columns add up to 9, so one must, then, use 8,7, and 4 to give you a 19 in the first column to the right, then a 5, 0, and 3 (plus one carried) in the middle column, and finally 6, 1, and 2. Of course the numbers, considered as part of vertical columns, may be in any order.
A mathematician would be appalled. Not sure it makes sense even to me anymore.
