With an eye to the longstanding complaints of one Frank Coluccio about peak demand in the Big Apple, it's not too hard to envision a point where the cost of creating new capacity is satisfied by changing the form of modulation, as opposed to say, increasing cellular density.

Let me preface the following by saying that I have Sprint PCS service and have had many of the same problems that Frank has pointed out in the past.

FWIW....here is an excerpt from a post I made over on the PCS thread.

PCS has 26,000 carriers on air (on 16,800 basestations). This works out to 1.55 carriers per basestation or about 3.87MHz. They have a penetration rate of 6.5%. I really dont think they are worried about additional spectrum anytime soon....

The wireless operators have been lobbying the FCC for more spectrum but when you look at the actual usage by PCS it makes it fairly clear that they are severely underutilizing the existing spectrum in most of the country. I think that PCS has about 30MHz of spectrum in most markets. They should have enough spectrum to accomdate increased penetration and usage that approach wireline rates, without coming close to taxing their system capacity.

Unforuntately, I dont think that there is enough hard data yet to figure out how much spectrum will be needed for wireless data services.
