Joseph, Re: "In short, Athlon is maxed out while P4 is just starting to reap the benefits of a superior architecture/process ? Which makes AMD more and more reliant on "powerpoint-slide" hammer."

I think so. See my response to Combjelly where I go into more detail on what I expect from the AMD roadmap.

I think that the K7 is approaching the limits of the micro-architecture, unless AMD were to start increasing various things like cache or front side bus bandwidth. However, since AMD is putting most of their energy into Hammer, I doubt we'll see many more improvements to K7.

Hammer will of course be impressive at launch. The added IPC, and the marginal clock increases will both combine to make a powerful processor. However, I think AMD's model number roadmap looks overly optimistic. I think with the way Pentium 4 is scaling, a 3.0GHz Northwood might be quite close to a M3400+ Hammer, thus making it very hard for AMD to justify their model numbers in the future.
