The "orbits" applet is very good! The asteroid doesn't get close to Mercury, however -- the color change in the orbit indicates when it goes from above to below the orbits of Earth and (more or less) the other planets. When it looks close to Mercury, it's millions of miles "underneath" it. The dangerous part was that the color change happened at the Earth. The amazing -- and most scary -- part is that we just discovered that this was coming at us on December 26, 2001! No technology could have deflected it or lessened the damage. Period.
