Nope, I still think it better to anticipate the unexpected, because national interests are exactly that, interests that are national. Russian national interest and US national interest, in the ME, are different.
Saddam is merely tapping the sources of power for his own end and ending, but the sources of power are independent from Saddam. A suicide bomber can wear an explosive jacket, or can steer a properly fitted ship into a quiet harbour, and commit suicide.
