Toshiba To Reopen Chip Plant On Signs Of Recovery

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Toshiba Corp. (6502) will soon restart a wing of its memory chip plant in the Mie Prefecture town of Yokkaichi, in response to the recovering market, company source said.

The wing has been closed since September. But since late last year, the company has been preparing to resume production in response to a rally in chip prices.

The plant produces flash memories for digital camera memory cards and special DRAMs for servers. By resuming production at the wing, the plant's monthly output will double to 70,000 20cm wafers worth of chips.

The chip market is in the process of recovering and chipmakers are reversing from last year's production cuts and looking at implementing production increases.

Hitachi Ltd. (6501), Fujitsu Ltd. (6702) and Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (6503) plan to continue production through Japan's Golden Week spring holiday beginning in late April. Last year they suspended output at several factories during the holiday.
