Chipmakers Boost Output Of Commodity-Grade Chips

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Major chipmakers are boosting output of commodity-grade chips, and are moving to full operation of existing facilities for commodity-grade chips as global chip prices recover.

Toshiba Corp. (6502) plans by September to nearly double production of flash memories used in memory cards in order to cash in on growing demand for digital cameras and cell phone sound devices.

Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (6503) plans early next year to raise by 8% production of micro-controllers used in home appliances, mainly the 16- and 32-megabit variety used in auto engines and DVD drives.

It also plans to raise monthly production of the increasingly in-demand 64Mb chips for cell phones and other portable devices to 5 million by early next year.

Elpida Memory Inc., which specializes in memories, will expand by 25% DRAM production for its parents NEC Corp. (6701) and Hitachi Ltd. (6501).

Major semiconductor manufacturers have been scrambling to shift to high value-added products and reduce production of commodity-grade chips since spring last year.

Unlike earlier production increases, however, the latest increase is not accompanied by expansion of facilities. In fact, chipmakers' capital spending for fiscal 2002 will fall short of fiscal 2001.
