would think they would find it odd to be protesting the gov't that allows them free speech and free political activity on behalf of one that does anything but that.

I saw no indication that they were doing that. Remember that I was still half asleep, but there seemed to be two different focuses. One was the "the money could be better spent on poor people than on bombs" crowd. And then there was the "before we wage a pro-active war, we should have a better reason than what we've heard so far" crowd. Due to the nature of the "usual suspects," the former will probably drown out the latter. I think that's a shame.
