I just asked this question OT at GWB, but here nothing is off topic.

I need the answer in a hurry for a writer I know...Does anyone know whether it is possible to ride a horse bareback, and without any reins? Do people do that?

The writer is reviewing a book in which that is routinely done by one of the book's characters. No indication is given of how the horse is controlled.

Anybody know about horses? Or have a suggestion for where I could find out the answer to this question?
