Father, Son Held in Chicago Baseball Attack
Fri Sep 20, 9:12 AM ET

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A father and his 15-year-old son were held on battery charges on Friday after they jumped onto the field near the end of a Chicago White Sox game and attacked Tom Gamboa, the first base coach for the visiting Kansas City Royals.

Police said the father, William Ligue, 34, was charged with aggravated battery. His son, whose name was not released because he is a juvenile, was charged with two counts of the same offense, police said.

Police did not disclose the motive for the attack but witnesses said one or both of the two attackers may have been drinking. Both live in the Chicago suburbs.

The shirtless attackers jumped Gamboa, 54, from behind, bringing him to the ground with a series of punches.

The Kansas City bench emptied immediately and dozens of players overwhelmed the attackers, pulling them away from the coach.

The incident happened in the ninth inning Thursday night with the Royals at bat. Kansas City won the game 2-1.
