Stock club is not a great concern because investment is not what it was in the 90's. SI still survives because it is a good read, and the key to these groups as The Well* showed before the Internet, is relationships. People posting to each other. Without that sort of ferment, the thing goes to hell, as topics alone don't interest people.

Hypernews was mentioned because it has the software tools. I figure non threaded, but mailbox oriented posting sites are it, as they encouarge reposts. People don't so much read and reply as post and repost. Hypernews can be customized to make a great posting and archival site. It is 80 free Perl files and has a fairly good posting interface. It also allows full HTML, or text, depending on what you select. The email gateway is unique. You would think it would cause more posting. It would make good collaborator ware.

*The Well was a group of dial up computers that used a Unix server and had a bulletin board interface. It predated the internet by a few years. It had 80,000 members and cost a bundle to run and access. It was mostly made of Bay Area people. It never made money and now still survives somewhere out there on the Internet. Its posting software was some unix abortion, but it worked and people like its interface at the time.
