I think the Harper Lee is a good choice.
My daughter-in-law is going to take my granddaughter to Europe in a year or two, visiting places associated with books she will have read. (They don't own a TV set, so it's 'Books City' at their house.) At D-in-L's request, I just gave G'daughter The Diary of Anne Frank. (They'll go to Amsterdam.) I'm not sure about that choice, unless they read it together.
BTW, my granddaughter, who plays the violin, auditioned for and was just accepted into the Seattle Youth Symphony!
