| Very interesting. Of course, not only is the writing clumsy, the melodrama overblown, and the characterization off-putting, but the emotional atmosphere of the novel recalls a sulky, precocious, but social awkward 16 year old, salving his ego with fantasies of showing "them". Beyond that, the primary paradox is that even Rand feels the need to make the case for the social utility of the "achievers", to condemn society for not appreciating them and instead feeding off of them too much. Obviously, selfishness is not quite self- validating, but must show that it contributes to the common good......... |
