What I find interesting about that article is this line:

Presumably, if he is awaiting the death penalty,
he was actually convicted of the crime.
Under such circumstances, I'm not sure that "allegedly"
is an appropriate term. This tells me that the author
is against the death penalty since the underlying
message seems to be that "allegedly" guilty, but
actually innocent, people may be executed.

Merely an observation.
