I was telling this to someone in PM and thought I'd mention it here:

We had a kitchen fire last night. One of the gas burners wasn't completely turned off and my husband piled pots and pans, as well as a plastic lid, on it after he washed the dishes. About fifteen minutes later, the fire alarms sounded and we ran into the kitchen to see three-foot flames shooting up. We were able to put the fire out ourselves, but most of the house is covered in soot from the plastic and our eyes and throats are still burning.

If we hadn't been home, we very likely would have lost everything.

Please keep fresh batteries in your fire alarms. They saved our property, and maybe our lives, last night.
