Ask yourself this: Suppose the US and Saddam agree to weapons inspections, as is being urged by everyone else. Even suppose they are supposed to be "unfettered". (A point which Saddam agrees to- -temporarily- -only when he is reminded of the sound of US F-16s over Baghdad.)

What do you think will happen next?

Will the inspectors be allowed to go where they want when they want without announcement of their plans? Or will glitches and hitches and delays (LOOOOOOONG delays) occur?

And will that lead to endless convoluted debate in the UN about whether Saddam has REALLY, TRULY violated the resolutions or is the US lying or trying to manufacture an issue? Will Saddam get significant support there regardless of what he does?

Given that, what's the point of inspection? You don't really think the inspectors will ever actually FIND anything, do you? And will not their failure to do so be taken as an indication there is nothing there?

Do you believe there is nothing there? No chemical, biological, nuclear? Remember, it is perfectly clear he had chemical weapons in the early 1990s. He used them on the Kurds. AND he is known to have been working on biological weapons. The last round of inspections clearly proved that.

Speaking of which, one of the head inspectors- -a Brit, not a Yank (sorry, thames)- -was on CNN a few days ago. He said yes, they had found proof of biological weapons at the end of the last round. Saddam even admitted it. Then Saddam kicked them out. And, with his obfuscation, interference, harassment, and delays, it had taken FOUR AND A HALF YEARS to get that single point of proof.

(Incidentally, those inspectors did not actually find the weapons. What they found were proof that Iraq had imported materials to make those weapons and the facilities to manufacture them.)

Did you notice my comparison of Saddam and Hitler in a previous post? Do you think another unstable megalomaniac should be allowed dangerous toys? What's the alternative?
