And the most troubling aspect is that his resignation was solely due to the fact that he was losing in the polls (due to ethical lapses.....

My impression was that there was pressure put to bear on him for "ethical lapses" and Republicans, sensing the possibility that they could run unopposed if he removed himself from the race after the deadline, were delighted with the outcome.... until the NJ Supreme Court ruling. And now they're whining.

These situations can -- and are-- gamed both ways.
