My husband works with his hands and is self-employed. He pays double Social Security taxes. It's insane, and we feel it, believe me.

I could see an argument that its a bad idea but its not insane. In many ways I pay double social security taxes as well. Certainly the cost to my employer helps depress my wage. And at the margin it might even cost jobs. It could be argued reasonably that while your husband pays double the tax I might pay 150% of it and someone at the margin who doesn't get a job because of the higher costs pays over 1000%.
