Argh, posts are piling up and I've got dinner to make and the Sopranos third season tapes to watch. -gg
I think we're in agreement about the lazy, about where and how much money should go for those programs. I spent a number of years sitting on the board of a group home for teen girls and have seen up close both the best and worst of this kind of program. At best, the girls learn to manage their finances, not get pregnant, and begin to value education. At worst, and there was a lot of this, they came back with their hands open after eighteen, expecting more money and support. Balancing the teaching of skills and values with the corrosive effects of disincentive, is key. And I don't think we know how to do it yet.
But personally, I think it behooves us as a so-called great society to keep trying.
I'm not ignoring your other post, just need to be with my family right now.
It's been good talking with you, Tim, as usual. |
