What had happened when you got home? Had the mess been cleaned up? The first time I ever babysat, a bunch of boys who knew I was going to be there (they were friends from the neighborhood), came over and like an idiot I let them in "just for a minute," and they went wild and made a big mess. I can't remember how I got them out. I might have called my parents. But I had to clean up the whole house before the people got home. Which I did, and found a broken spoon. What a nightmare. I had to confess what had happened. Of course they never asked me to babysit again. The spoon had had some special significance to them. It's an oddly painful memory. (Shame.)
