If you know little of him since the 60's, I highly recommend checking out some of his work since, particularly the late career renaissance which brought us "Time Out of Mind" in 1997. Time Out Of Mind won the Grammy for best album that year, and deservedly so....
Mr. Mark, the SI resident Dylanite who has not been seen around these parts for awhile, put together a great Dylan compilation setlist which spans the years of his career. I downloaded the songs off either the CD's or the Net and burned a copy of the two disc set. It really gives a great flavor of a career which, unlike so many others, did not end in the 1960's but only began there.

The Essential Bob Dylan is also an excellent two disc career progression....though it tends more to the "hits" than Mr. Mark's selections do. There is some overlap:

Dylan purists may object to the "little of this little of that" approach of this compilation. One wrote on Amazon:
"If you want a cd to fill the space in your collection between the "cars" and the "eagles", then buy the doobie brothers greatest hits instead.If you want bob dylan start with his first album and stop buying when you get to his last, avoiding along the way records that the recording company chooses to put out as a greatest hits or compilations."
I don't know that I agree with that (it's a great idea to listen to all of the Dylan albums, but I am assuming a lot of people don't have the time), so one or both of these compilations is a good start. |
