They don't need it. Good rap artists can do quite well by themselves. It is only very expensive productions with very little public appeal that need it.

But even that's not true, really. All classical symphonies that I know of get public funding. Yet classical recordings sell well in music stores. Most have a large collection. Can they not live on the revenues from that?

If they people who like an art form are not willing to support it, perhaps it is best for all that they either do without or cough up.
