Looks like things are tough for the Navy in Britain.

It's not just the Navy. It's the whole country. The government lives in "La La" land. The taxes are high, the employment is low. The government officials are many.

The price of property goes up every week, the TV stations only broadcast adverts for new loans. Everybody is in hoc to the eyeballs (apart from me and a few others)

If the firemen were given a 40% pay rise, it would mean many of them would just come off income support which is paid by the government anyway. You cannot support a family on £16.5k a year. Remember we pay 17.5% VAT tax on everything. Taxes on gasoline, alcohol, and tobacco are astronomical. A pack of cigarettes costs over $6 for example.

Therefore when US Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill blabs this crapola

"Reiterating that Japan and Europe need to also become engines for global growth, O'Neill said in an interview on Fox television that continental Europe should emulate the UK's economic performance."

You can be sure he is talking out of his ass, as that seems to be where his head is permanently stuck.

He is a clueless idiot of the first order.
