Your employer may pay the insurance company, but it's still compensation to you for the work you did. You agreed that you'd be better off letting the employer buy the insurance because the rate is lower for large volume. The point of insurance is that we mutually agree to pay for something we all need, so it will be available when we do need it. Research has shown that when health care is free, and prescriptions are free, people tend to abuse the system, going to the doctor for the slightest thing. This overloads the system. When there is a small, but non-trivial cost, people are more discriminating.
