Hi KLP - I never even heard of a Medigap policy before my mother went into the hospital. I may be a lawyer but I don't handle every kind of law, and elder care is one of the things I don't handle.

After this experience, my eyes were opened, and I am advising not only Medigap but to get long term care insurance ASAP. The younger you are, the cheaper it is.

Medicare won't cover you if you spend years and years needing health care around the clock, like my Uncle Victor's mother-in-law. She has Alzheimer's. She must not have had long term care insurance because they are keeping her in their home with a private duty nurse round the clock. I will ask him about it next time I see him. He's very well off but it seems to be quite a burden on them. Maybe she has the insurance and they just don't want her to be institutionalized.

AARP seems to have good rates, and the Feds also seem to have good rates (husband works for the Feds) so I am comparison shopping during open season.

Get LTC insurance ASAP, get Medigap as soon as you start getting SS.

If you buy an expensive policy then when you get old you can live in a tony facility that is more like a hotel than a nursing home.

It's probably worth my own while in the long run to pay for a LTC policy for my own mom. I will ask my sisters and brother to kick in.
