You are not contradicting what I have said. We agree that USA "dealt with regimes on the ground, according to whether they were compatible with, or hostile to, American interests" (your words).

USA was "trying to prevent the "correlation of forces" from favoring the Soviet Union" (your words). I agree. This is why, for example, the USA supported the military coup d'etat of fascist dictator Pinochet against the democratically elected left-wing government of Allende Chile. Because they would not let socialism spread in the world, the US subjected Chileans to a cruel and brutal dictatorship.
