Iran Bans Advertising for U.S. Goods

11/06/2002 18:47:26 EST

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iran has banned advertising for American goods, the state TV
announced Thursday, reflecting criticism of U.S. support of Israel.

The ban came just as advertising for American products was on the increase, in
defiance of a calls for a boycott by hardline clerics.

The TV broadcast said the government imposed the ban on the recommendation of the
Society for Defending Palestine, a nongovernment body. Tehran, which often criticizes
what it sees as Washington's bias in favor of Israel, does not recognize the Jewish
state nor allow Israeli goods into the country.

U.S.-Iran trade has been at a low level since the U.S. imposed restrictions after the
1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran by radical students, following the Islamic
revolution in Iran.

President Bush included Iran in his "axis of evil" category of states backing terrorism,
along with Iraq and North Korea.
