>>it's not surprising that we are caught between the zero-sum territorial world of our chimpoid antecedents and the liberal idea of a voluntary infinite world<<

I used to work for a lawyer who hated to lose cases, a much older man.

I'd grumble about going to court to defend deadbeats who didn't want to pay their bills.

He'd say, "you really think they should pay their bills, don't you?" And I'd say yes.

Then I'd go to court and use every loophole known to man to keep them from having to pay.

I remember one case where the plaintiff was old, and on crutches. I think he probably died before he got paid. I think he would have given everything he had for the opportunity to hit my client, or maybe me, upside the head with one of those crutches.

I was glad to hang out my shingle, and pick my own cases.

But, you know what? It's my duty to use every loophole known to man. No way out.
