Re Neal Stephenson - I think you will like him a lot. They are both cyberpunk and both tell of a near future that is at once dark and interesting, but Neal Stephenson is a far better constructor of plot than William Gibson, whose stories very often do not even have a meaningful end.

Re Umberto Eco - His "Foucault's Pendulum" almost killed me (and taught me quite a bit about Jewish and Christian mysticism :) but it was one of the best books I have read. I read very disappointing reviews of "Baudolino", by the way.

Have you ever tried J. G. Ballard? I find some of his books similar to Philip K. Dick, especially "The Atrocity Exhibition" that was perhaps one of the more twisted novels I have read and that is against some competition. Your husband should read it if he likes the "dark side" of Cronenberg :)
