Hi John Cavanaugh; Re: "We have a lot of handguns, protection to some, but from what? -> Other humans with handguns."

A handgun is a lightweight gun, and is a convenient thing for protection from animals. I myself have carried one in times and places where I had no fear of humans, but was worried about animals. And I've seen other people use them the same way.

Suppose you're going to go on a 25 mile hike. Do you want to carry a rifle or a pistol for defending yourself from the wildlife? Before anyone concludes that wildlife is not dangerous they should first do a search on the web for "ate by a bear" or "attacked by a mountain lion".

A rifle is an offensive weapon used to kill wildlife at a distance. As such a rifle is a hunting weapon. By contrast, a pistol is a defensive weapon used to kill wildlife at close range (that is, when it's about to kill you).

Yeah I know that the granola eaters believe that wildlife would never attack a human, and that you can eliminate the threat by making noise as you walk (I have doubts about this, it depends on where you walk, etc.), but the fact is that a .45 auto makes you feel a lot better in bear country.
