Husband just got home - he suggests that a good game with murder and backstabbing is Diplomacy, which I actually think you'd like. wikipedia.org
However, I don't think it's suitable for a family that wants to remain friends afterwards. My husband is still ticked off at people he's played Diplomacy with, even though he hasn't seen them in 20 years.
Channeling the DH here:
He says anything by Rio Grande games -- good ones for beginners are Medici, a bidding game, Carcassone, a tile laying and property claiming game, Web of Power, building chains and gaining influence, El Grande, taking territory in medieval Spain, Puerto Rico, a very intricate game of developing the island of Puerto Rico.
Another good one is Acquire, an Avalon Hill game now made by Hasbro.
He likes the old 3M games which are available on Ebay and at garage sales.
Another classic game is Settlers of Catan, which is collecting and trading resources and building roads and cities on a variable game map.
If you like trains, 1856 and 1870 are still in print, but take a long time to play. Another game company he likes is Winsome, which has a lot of train games. Physical quality is not very good but the actual games are good. |
