We get limited snow--last year we got only one snowstorm that gave more than an inch, but every ten years or so we get a major storm, one year it gave us three feet. The problem is that we have no snowplows, so they generally just let it melt, which can take quite awhile. Meanwhile, we're driving on packed snow which of course turns into ice. The big storms they bring out the road graders, which leave about an inch of packed snow, and also front end loaders, which also leave packed snow.
The biggest problem is that we get a lot of black ice. And when we do get some snow that packs, even if they do sand it, and we have only one or two sanding trucks so it takes a while to get to even the worst places, the sun melts it during the day and it refreezes at night, of course with all the sand washed away. So we can get spells of two or three weeks of really nasty driving. And our roads, of course, are narrow, and winding, and hilly, and high crowned, and with deep ditches and totally inadequate guardrails. Part of the country appeal, but horrid in winter. |
