What we're talking about here CB is the principle of equality of opportunity. The GI Bill, VA and HUD mortgages, federal financial aid, etc. address financial barriers to equality of opportunity. In the case of the GI Bill and other federal and state financial assistance, the applicant is still required to demonstrate proof of academic competence. And that's the rub with this issue - the policy in question gives undeserved preference of admittance based upon race. It has nothing to do with the ability to satisfactorily complete the course of study (which is what college admittance grade requirements attempt to objectively determine) or determining whether the applicant has strong moral character and leadership qualities (which activities and sports participation attempt to objectively determine.)

That's why I said, and you seem to agree, that the State has an interest in educating and providing financial assistance to facilitate education amongst the disadvantaged. Where I take umbrage is using minorities as mere means to the end of a pet project called "diversity," which I would argue the State has no compelling interest in advancing, on grounds of objective fairness.

But anyway... :)
