New York Times Uncensors Itself, Sort Of
newsmax.com

After being scolded by such left-of-center media allies as the Washington Post, Newsweek and NPR, the New York Times has published "revised" versions of two previously censored columns about Augusta National Golf Club.

Ax-grinding executive editor Howell Raines denied that he killed the columns because they disagreed with the editorial page, the Associated Press reported today.

"There is not now, nor will there ever be, any attempt to curb the opinions of our writers" or to "get them to agree with the editorial page or any other section of the paper where an opinion is expressed," Raines claimed.

As Fox News Channel's wonderfully dry Brit Hume responded tonight, "Oh."

Hmm, wonder what those "revisions" included ... or excluded. Note that the columns were yanked not because of factual inaccuracies but merely because of the heterodox opinions expressed.

We hope that Raines will follow NewsMax's lead and not crush dissent. Though most of us agree with the recent public opinion poll reported by the Post that Augusta National's membership policy is its own business, we won't censor our pundit Tammy Bruce, who argued otherwise.

Bruce's column sparked a flood of letters wondering why NewsMax published it. Because we don't want to be like the thought police at the almighty New York Times, that's why.
