Tuned in too late to catch it, but I caught it on his TV show last night. I think Lott is genuinely contrite, and deep down he is probably decent. But like so many pols he is too eager to please whatever audience he is speaking to. In the case of these two remarks, he was probably just trying to say something to please Strom Thurmond. This might play well in a Lion's Club somewhere in Mississippi, but not many other places. It just reinforces the belief that he is politically tone deaf and a lousy tactician. Is this really the best man to be majority leader?
