Rather than re-type what I've just typed, I'll paste these posts. I think it's time for people to start calling for Trent Lott to step aside. Waxing nostalgic for Jim Crow isn't what we need right now. His comments may have cost Terrell the election in Louisiana. Of course, Robert Byrd should resign also. Lott's comment: Speaking Thursday at a 100th birthday party and retirement celebration for Sen. Thurmond (R-S.C.) in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, Lott said, "I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either." Byrd's comment: Asked by host Tony Snow about the status of race relations, Byrd said, "They're much, much better than they've been in my lifetime." And then he went on to prove how much short of ideal they are. "There are white niggers," he said. "I've seen a lot of white niggers in my time. I'm going to use that word." Message 18315012 Well, I suppose he could have been talking about big government or federalism, but his office hasn't clarified exactly what he meant. So far, this is all they've had to say: "Senator Lott's remarks were intended to pay tribute to a remarkable man who led a remarkable life. To read anything more into these comments is wrong." And that's his spokesman, Lott has said nothing about it yet. So far the only criticism has been on the right. There is an eerie silence from the press and the dems on this. Wouldn't you think they'd be all over it? I think they want Lott in there for the 2004 elections so his words can be used against him when it's most opportune for them. At best Lott is once again showing his weak leadership skills and lack of political acumen by saying something like this and not quickly clarifying, and at worst he's a racist slob. It's time for him to go. Message 18316187 In 1998 and 1999, Lott was criticized after disclosures that he had been a speaker at meetings of the Council of Conservative Citizens, an organization formed to succeed the segregationist white Citizens' Councils of the 1960s. In a 1992 speech in Greenwood, Miss., Lott told CCC members: "The people in this room stand for the right principles and the right philosophy. Let's take it in the right direction, and our children will be the beneficiaries." Asked to comment on Lott's remarks at the Thurmond celebration, Gordon Baum, CEO of the Council of Conservative Citizens, said "God bless Trent Lott." washingtonpost.com. Message 18316292 Strom Thurmond has made amends. Not a peep out of Lott yet clarifying his remarks. If Republicans don't demand he step aside, or at least get an explanation, they deserve to get trounced in 2004. Expecting the issue to quietly go away isn't going to happen. In addition to the obvious moral shortcomings, his comments will be used as a campaign issue. He is unfit to lead and needs to go now. Message 18316247 | ||||||||||||
