My impression is that the reasons paleocons hate Rand are because of her stance on religion and her stance on charity. I thought the best refutation of both points was Edmund Wilson's work on sociobiology, although I don't suppose Rand would have had much use for the concept that one could further one's own aims through one's progeny or one's extended family or otherwise indirectly.

Another impression is that die hard Rand fans never had children so did not really understand that the sacrifices one makes for one's family are not necessarily onerous.

I like to think of Rand as someone who saw life as a Hollywood movie of the 1930's, where everybody dressed to the teeth, drank martinis and stood around talking terribly clever dialogue. Can't imagine her changing a diaper, whether the diaperee be an elderly parent, a spouse with cancer, or her own baby.
