Sorry to hear about your sister. Hope she quits smoking and starts doing whatever she can to improve her health. My first fulltime job was with the State of Louisiana in the mapping section (draftsman trainee). A couple of weeks after I started they put my name in the monthly newsletter as a new employee, and a long time employee with the same last name came to visit me to see if we were related, which we were. Second cousins. He was the first person I'd ever seen talking with an electronic gizmo that amplified his vocal cords -- can't remember the exact details now but my recollection was that he'd had a laryngotomy -- he definitely had not stopped smoking and was still a chain smoker -- with emphysema -- never been sure if the next part is true or imagined -- I think he was inhaling smoke through a laryngectomy hole? He died soon afterwards. Lung cancer and/or emphysema. Addictive behavior, pigheadedness, and world class denial run in my family.
