Some close friends have a Newfoundland. This wonder actually goes outside especially for the rain, and lies down in puddles to cool (this I didn't believe until she did it one day when I was walking her... I couldn't call her back for laughing, but believe me a wet Newfie really is whiffy). She adores snow - which we don't really get that often, at least not for the last decade in SE England - and the cold generally. Hard-put to call it cruel. Her finest moment of this kind, BTW, came when she padded out onto an iced-over pond and patiently broke the ice with her front paws, so that she could stand in the water beneath...
