I disagree to a point. My theory is that many PETA member *do* care about animals....a wee bit too much. I think PETA's popularity is a sign of a society with far too much money and leisure time on its hands. When people devote so much energy to the pain of chickens and minks, and ignore the hungry citizens in their own country, not to mention around the world,there's something amiss with priorities, IMO.

I certainly believe in respectfulness toward all beings, but to me there's a hierarchy, with the comfort and health of human beings on top.

I know people may disagree. This is one of my "touchstone" issues these days, though.
