I agree. The experiment in individual freedom was too valuable to be fractured by division into two or even many.

R.E.Lee was certainly the preeminent commander of the war. He was blessed (IMO) by a greater percentage of dedicated fighters than was the north, but was destined ultimately to succumb to greater numbers in men and materiel.
