I think you are mistaken about the questioning of the humanity of blacks at that particular time. Most people thought that they ought to be baptized, by that time: one does not baptize a monkey.

Do you have any reference material to back this up? I'm not disputing your point, but I'm not sure its accurate either.

Rather, they were considered to be incompetent, and in need of tutelage.

I think Glory did a good job of illustrating this attitude, with the colonel of the Contraband regiment calling them "little monkey children" and treating them with no respect for their intelligence and abilities.

It was not at all unusual for men to be sentimental about their mammies, or for girls to have had a black playmate before adolescence. The emotional relations must have been quite tricky.......

This is a huge can of worms and emotionally volatile, and not to mention potentially erotically charged. Many slavery apologists cite the emotional attachments as evidence that slavery was a humane institution, but I'm not buying it.
