At the risk of being hooted from the thread, I note that the original question referred to the greatest American general, not just of the War Between the States, but of all time. Let us not be so parochial as to forget Washington, Pershing, McArthur, Patton, and a few others who had the bad fortune to miss the big one.

But at risk of pulling the thread off from its 1860's focus, shall we assume all future discussion is of the greatest Civil War generals?
