But if the South had headed toward Washington, then turned and defeated the pursuing Union forces, then continued on to take the capitol, you don't think there would have been huge pressure in the North to resolve things? I mean, the defeat would have been devastating for the North, and what better time to sue for peace than after taking your opponent's capitol?
