I wish I'd seen the Travel Channel Venice program. If you see it announced again, tell me.
I heard that they're having a big storm there now. We were very lucky and had sun and blue skies and temps in the forties every day. The guide book suggested that the best time to visit Venice is Nov, Dec, Jan, and Feb. No long lines, though there were a lot of tourists around, so I can imagine what it's like in the summer months. I think Carnival would be awful for an adult, but for a child it would probably be thrilling.
I saw this book for sale in one of the museums. If you plan to take your son, you might want to order it:

I see there's also a Florence for Kids and an Ancient Rome for Kids.
Edit:
From the catalog linked above: VENICE FOR KIDS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The history of the glorious maritime Republic of Venice as raccounted in its history and legends. An informative guidebook which is also fun to use since many of the chapters are organized in the form of a quiz. The pages dedicated to St. Mark's basilica are truly unforgettable in their vivid description of the kidnap and transfer of the body of the city's patron saint, Mark the Evangelist. In addition, the book explains how everyday life was lived in past centuries. A guide of interest to parents as well as to their offspring since it includes detailed maps and the opening times of the various churches and musems.
