When my Dad was in the Marines, they taught him never to say "gun." A boot who forgot was forced to parade naked with only his rifle. With one hand he shouldered his rifle; with the other, he held his ... well, you know. He had to say over and over: "That is my rifle, this is my gun (indicating that which his left hand held at attention). My rifle is for shootin'; this is for fun." He never made that mistake again.
