I am no Vietnam War historian, but weren't we asked by the French to send in military advisers back in the 50s during Truman's Presidency?

I believe that this is right, and that, I always thought, was how the American Vietnam War began.

Military advisors turned into military troops.

America's military was "engaged" in Vietnam for a long time.
