As I recall -- I was just afraid that China was going to wig out and tensions would escalate. The Chinese government, despite my personal reservations on their human right violations (within its borders), have historically shown reasoned restraint.

I don't think China was surprised (in the end) by what transpired.

I think they don't like a whole lot of attention -- its mostly a cultural thing that I've found to be common with the many Asian people's/nations -- and especially the Chinese.
